Sukhothai Airport
Sukhothai Airport was developed by Bangkok Airways and construction began in 1992 on an area of approximately 1,018 rai (163 hectares). The airport is located across three subdistricts—Tha Thong, Khlong Krachong, and Yan Yao—in Sawankhalok District, Sukhothai Province.
The airport officially commenced operations on 12 April 1996, serving the Bangkok–Sukhothai–Chiang Mai route with ATR 72-500 aircraft, each accommodating up to 70 passengers.
To ensure safe and efficient flight operations, Bangkok Airways has collaborated with the Aeronautical Radio of Thailand Ltd. (AEROTHAI), which provides air traffic control services and operates aviation communication and navigation systems. These include satellite-based Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT) communication networks and various air navigation support facilities.
In addition, the Aviation Meteorological Division of the Thai Meteorological Department has installed weather monitoring and reporting equipment at the airport. These systems include wind direction and speed indicators, barometric pressure instruments, and temperature monitoring equipment to support aviation safety and operational efficiency.
Sukhothai Airport has been designated as a Customs Airport for scheduled commercial air services, facilitating international travel for passengers departing from or arriving in Sukhothai. In the past, the airport operated international routes connecting Bangkok, Sukhothai, and Luang Prabang, as well as Luang Prabang–Sukhothai services.
As part of its commitment to environmental sustainability, Bangkok Airways achieved Organizational Carbon Footprint (CFO) verification in 2017 across five operational areas: Samui Airport (continuing from 2016), Sukhothai Airport, Trat Airport, the Company Headquarters, and the Airline Maintenance Center. This certification reflects the company’s ongoing efforts to measure, manage, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, demonstrating its contribution toward addressing global climate change and promoting sustainable aviation development.
